NY Legislation Tries to Ban iPods in Crosswalks

New York State Sen. Carl Kruger has proposed a law to fine pedestrians $100 for using mp3 players, Game Boys, cell phones and other electronic devices in crosswalks, suggesting that the use of these devises in the streets poses a threat to public safety. (See: http://media.www.dailyfreepress.com/media/storage/paper87/news/2007/02/13/News/Ny.Legislation.May.Mute.Ipods.In.Crosswalks-2716172.shtml)

It is arguable that the use of electronic devises could interfere with a pedestrian's awareness of his or her surroundings, especially because so many have been hit by cars in NY while listening to music. However, i don't think that it is possible for legislation to regulate the common sense of looking both ways before crossing the street. In a city as busy as New York, anything that deters a pedestrian from paying attention to traffic is hazardous to their safety. In my opinion, people just need to be careful, and if necessary only listen to your iPod in one ear.
If this law did pass, i foresee many opposing music-lovers making a fuss about it.

Hello!

As rumored, Apple aired a new iPone commercial during the Oscars on Feb. 25th.
The ad aired multiple times throughout the award show, and features many popular movie and television clips of actors answering their telephones with different forms of "hello." The commercial differed from Apple's recent ad campaign comparing the Apple Computer to a PC. It was fun, creative, and grabbed viewers attention with repetition and familiarity. The commercial was a little teaser to announce that we should be expecting the iPone this coming June. Here's a clip of the ad, thanks to the Apple website... enjoy!

Apple-Cisco Settlement

Some of you may have heard in the news over the past few months of the legal dispute between Apple Computer and Cisco Systems over the 'iPhone' name. Back on January 10th, just a day after Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the company's newest product the iPhone, Cisco filed suit against the company over trademark issues. (Since 2000, Cisco has used the 'iPhone' trademark for their series of phones that provide free long distance calls over the internet.)
As of February 21st, both companies announced that they have resolved their dispute involving the 'iPhone' trademark. Under the agreement, both companies are free to use the 'iPhone' trademark on their products, and both companies have dismissed pending actions regarding the trademark. Very little details were released about the settlement, except that Apple is able to use the trademark 'iPone' in exchange for the two companies working together to explore interoperability between the companies products in the areas of security, consumer and business communications. According to an article on TECH.BLORGE.COM, there may be more to this dispute than meets the eye.
